Gene Glick began his
career as a loan officer at the smallest bank in Indianapolis after he was discharged
from the Army in November 1945. Under his guidance, the bank soon made more G. I. loans
than all other banks in the city combined.
During this time he met
his bride-to-be Marilyn and the two of them became aware of the need and potential market
for housing. They began selling homes in the evenings and used this knowledge to start
their own company in 1947. By 1949, they were working full time for their own company
which constructed 16 homes that year. Twelve years later, they established an Indiana
record by building more than 1,000 single-family dwellings in a two-year period.
The company first entered the multi-family housing market in 1962 with
the development of an 80-unit rental community in Indianapolis and by 1974 shifted its
entire focus to the development of multi-family communities.
Today, the Gene B. Glick Company manages 19,000 apartments in 10 states.
It was also one of the largest builders in the country, having built over 30,000
residential units.
In addition to the market rate communities included throughout this
website, the Company has also built and manages low and moderate income
subsidized housing.
Mr. Glick and his company have received numerous awards and honors for
both professional achievements as well as community service and philanthropic endeavors.
A few of these awards include:
- National Association of Home Builders National Housing Hall of Fame
- National Association of Home Builders Property Management Company of
the Year Award
- INC. Magazine Master Entrepreneur Award
- Distinguished Alumnus Service Award of the Indiana University School of
Business
- Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Butler University
- Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Society of Fund Raising
Executives
- American Business Ethics Award from the Society of Financial Service
Professionals
To commemorate the company's 50th anniversary as
well as the Glicks' 50th wedding anniversary, he wrote Born to Build. An excerpt
from the book has been included in Tom Brokaw's bestseller The Greatest
Generation.
"I know how I want to spend the rest of my life,"
Gene Glick told his future wife Marilyn one day after visiting a construction site with
its smells of freshly turned earth and lumber. "I want to build homes for families
with children and grandchildren. Something fine will be created from nothing."
